Getting Back to Your Roots (the Earth)

On a quantum physics level everything in our vast universe is comprised of energy (matter and energy are the two basic components) – when scientifically studied at the most fundamental levels (Caltech). The concepts of earthing and grounding refers to the practice of connecting your physical body to the earth’s inherent, natural charge. These terms are often mistakenly used interchangeably. Grounding is actually when the electrical circuit is connected to the ground itself (the current carrying aspect) and has a zero-volt potential; safely transporting excess electricity back into to the earth. Examples of grounding are the electrical system(s) inside your home. The electricity that powers your appliances, devices, Wi-fi etc. There’s also a new age, hippie culture vibe that has unfortunately plagued this proven scientific and holistic modality as socially unacceptable with the recommendations of walking barefoot or touching plants that are rooted in top soil. Historically, humans were almost always in contact with the Earth, but modern lifestyles with rubber-soled shoes and indoor living have severed us from this natural synergy we once maintained with our planet. This happens to coincide with the rise of chronic inflammation and related health disorders from our modern western lifestyle which has largely separated us from nature altogether.

Consider that humans are electrical beings. Our bodies function electrically, with cells and systems operating on electrical charges. Compounding this issue is that fact that we don't have as much direct contact with the earth as we once had as aforementioned. We're in constant contact with static electricity from our modern environment too – which leads to a build-up of positive static charges in the body. This imbalance of electrons in the body can be problematic as it can cause free radicals to accumulate and increase oxidative stress, which leads to inflammation, cellular damage, etc. However, the Earth itself has a negative surface charge, rich in free electrons, primarily sourced from the sun and the Earth's core. So, putting yourself in physical contact with the Earth's surface electrons by walking barefoot on sand, soil, grass, or rock; swimming in the ocean or freshwater helps rebalance the electrical charge in your body and neutralize free radicals. The benefits of this practice are very compelling, providing vast improvements in: immune system function, reducing pain and inflammation, regulating cortisol, improving sleeping patterns and even reducing blood viscosity (PMID: 36528336, PMID: 25848315, PMID: 22757749. PMID: 22291721) NIH.GOV (PubMed)

Grounding mats have become a popular and convenient alternative to the natural form of grounding. Especially those who reside in urban environments and have little to no access to natural elements. Unfortunately, grounding mats could actually be doing us more harm than good, here’s why. Most people would simply plug their grounding mats into the grounding system of our home’s electrical outlets – which does theoretically ground us to the earth. The trouble with this practice is that the grounding system inside your home often carries “dirty electricity” …stray current, electrical interference etc. that’s like waste/sewage energy. Electromagnetic engineers can measure these unwanted forms of electrical interference. The problem is the practicality of hiring a professional to measure these variables in your residence. We don’t want to turn ourselves into a lightning rod absorbing all of this “dirty electricity” that seeks the fastest path back into the ground. You’re basically becoming a part of the grounding system and zapping yourself with unwanted electrical interference. We want to be connected to the earth itself not the ground. The only proper way to use a grounding mat would be to plug it directly into the earth itself, not very practical, especially if you don’t live on the ground floor!

Some important takeaways here are, if you truly want to experience the benefits of connecting yourself to the earth (EARTHING). The use of grounding mats might not be the best solution. Why not do what humans have always done. Get yourself outside and spend some actual time in nature. It can be as simple as walking barefoot on your front lawn, going for a swim in a lake (or ocean if you live near one). You can even just dip your feet in a river somewhere. Think about this, it doesn’t cost you a single penny to engage in this powerfully rejuvenating, and restorative practice – it will pay huge dividends to your psychological health and physiological well-being.
