America's Warriors the Elite 1%

A statistical analysis of America’s most coveted groups across society reveals some surprising information that most of you (veterans) are likely unaware of. The number of people belonging to the world’s top wealth holders, which are in the UHNW (Ultra-High-Net Worth) category (maintaining 30 million or more in assets), according to Credit Suisse are the top 1% income bracket. These super-rich individual’s control approximately 25% of entire global wealth.

Now let's look at an estimated probability of competing in professional athletics in some capacity. Of all the student-athletes that participate in college sports, which have professional leagues, less than 2% become professional athletes. In reality, most student-athletes will never play pro sports and will depend on solely their academics to prepare them for the professional arena after their sports career is over. The immense hurdle(s) to overcome in going from a starting NCAA Division 1 football player to landing a roster spot on an NFL team is only 1.6%. Making the jump and transitioning from playing NCAA Division 1 basketball to the NBA is even less probable at only 1.2%.

The desire for self-fulfillment (self-actualization) was eloquently described by the famous psychologist Abraham Maslow in his prolific theory the Hierarchy of Needs. Self-actualization can generally be thought of as the full realization of one’s creative, intellectual, and social potential through an innate internal drive (versus external rewards such wealth, status, or power). Since self-actualization is rooted in leveraging one’s abilities to reach their potential, it is a very personal and individual process. Self-actualization is about achieving your dreams, which means that it is always within your grasp – whether that means becoming an artist, entrepreneur, educator, or wherever your true passion and inspiration lies. The need for personal growth and continued development throughout one’s life aligns with our deepest values, beliefs, and aspirations. Seeking improvement through continuous life-long learning and acquiring new skills are paramount for substantive and lasting success. Ironically Maslow himself believed that self-actualization was indeed rare, only occurring in about 1% of the entire population. You’ve already done most of the work and built a solid foundation for yourself through your selfless service and sacrifice.
